Elon Musk Wants To Charge $8 Per Month For Verified Twitter Accounts

SpaceX founder Elon Musk intends to charge $8 per month for Twitter users who want to be verified and also have that cool blue check mark next to their name.

Musk, who successfully took over Twitter, announced that Twitter Blue users will receive multiple benefits such as ad reduction, priority for mentions and replies, paywall bypass for publishers, and other features that will make using the app more convenient for them.

Many users expressed their dissatisfaction with Musk's plan to charge verified users $8 per month, calling it 'absurd.' In a tweet, he responded, 'To all complainers, please continue complaining, but it will cost $8.' Twitter's new owner really has no chill.

He even said in a separate tweet that he was sick of “Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark”, calling it bullshit.

Musk also pointed out that the subscription price differ from country to country. Twitter Blue is only available in the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The service currently costs $4.99 in the US, $3.49 CAD in Canada, $4.49 AUD in Australia, and $4.49 NZD in New Zealand.

The adjustments would affect approximately 400,000 verified Twitter accounts. According to Musk's plan, advertising makes up for 90% of the company's $5 billion in yearly revenue, which would be whittled down for Twitter Blue users.

On Tuesday, one of Musk's financial supporters was in favor of his $8 monthly subscription plan. The CEO of Binance had already invested $500 million in the deal, and said that he supported the proposal since it would greatly help in addressing malicious spam bots.

'We support that,' said CEO Changpeng Zhao. 'We think that's a great idea,' Zhao said, adding that he supports anything that will help get rid of pesky spam bots.

“We want to be extremely supportive of free speech.' When asked about Binance's $500 million investment, Zhao responded, 'We are hoping to increase the freedom of money and free speech comes before the freedom of money.'

Twitter Blue remained independently from the company's verification process long before the Tesla CEO took ownership. The service is currently priced at $4.99 per month and gives users access to multiple features such as undoing tweets, organizing them, and altering the appearance and feel of Twitter.
