So, how does such a large colony form without being noticed?

So, how does such a large colony form without being noticed?

Particularly in older buildings, the gaps left for insulation purposes between interior and exterior walls are completely enclosed and dark when viewed from the outside. For bees, these spaces are no different from a tree hollow in nature. They offer protection from the wind, stable temperatures, shelter from the rain, and are inaccessible to predators. When a queen bee finds such a space, the colony continues to grow over the years, new combs are added each season, and over time, it can reach several meters in length.

The discovery of these types of colonies within walls generally occurs in two ways; either a moisture stain, a brown leakage, or a faint buzzing sound is noticed on the wall, or as in this example, it suddenly appears when a wall is opened during a renovation. At this point, the most critical rule that comes into play is to absolutely avoid chemical spraying or direct intervention. This is because a disturbed colony can become aggressive and pose a threat to everyone in the area. The correct method is to call an experienced beekeeper or a municipal officer to safely remove the queen bee along with the comb and transfer them to a secure hive. In this way, both the worker bees can continue their tasks without risk and the colony can find a new home without perishing.
