Following ChatGPT’s success, many other AI models entered the market.
Elon Musk drew attention with Grok, which he integrated into X. AI products performing well in text, image, and video processing were almost entirely U.S.-made. Meanwhile, other tech-leading nations were also working on their own AI models—one of them being China.
China became the first country to challenge the U.S. in artificial intelligence.
China’s next-generation AI model, Deepseek, surpassed ChatGPT in download numbers in a short time! Deepseek offered a much more cost-effective solution while delivering better performance than its competitors. It is claimed that Deepseek AI has outperformed Meta’s Llama 3.1, OpenAI’s GPT-4, and Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.5.
Deepseek provides R1, an AI engine equivalent to OpenAI’s $200-per-month service, completely free of charge.
Since Deepseek is both free and open-source, it has caused the stock values of major U.S. tech companies to decline.Deepseek’s chatbot has also become the most downloaded AI application.
China is highly ambitious in AI.
The country announced that it will invest 1 trillion yuan (~$138 billion) over the next five years to advance its AI industry.
AI wars have officially begun.
After Deepseek’s rapid rise, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta will invest $65 billion in AI throughout 2025. Meta’s goal is to compete with industry leaders OpenAI and Google. The company is also building a massive data center in Manhattan, which will have a total power capacity exceeding 2 gigawatts. This facility will partially go online by the end of the year.
