20 Gravestones Remain in Park as Kids Play Around Tombs
The area known for years as the 'cemetery park' in the Eyüp Sultan district of Osmaniye has once again become a topic of discussion. Although a significant portion of the graves in the region have been relocated to another cemetery over time, about 20 graves and tombstones still remain within the park. The local residents are advocating for the complete transformation of this space, where children play, into a fully modern park.

For many years, an area in the Eyüp Sultan district of Osmaniye that was once used as a cemetery has gradually transformed into what locals now refer to as a 'cemetery park', blending seamlessly into the fabric of the city. During the relocation of the cemetery, the majority of the graves were transferred to the cemetery in Dereobası. However, approximately 20 graves and tombstones have remained in the same place for years. Today, this area has become a green space where neighborhood residents sit and rest, and where children run and play games.
Hamdi Börk, born in 1960 and one of the oldest residents of the neighborhood, shares his connection with the area, stating that he grew up here and that some of his close family members were once buried in this cemetery. According to Börk, the cemetery doesn't disturb anyone; instead, he believes that those who fear death become uneasy at the sight of it. Recalling flying kites here as a child, Börk emphasizes that the cemetery has never been a source of discomfort for him.
The psychology of children is being disrupted: The locals demand a modern park.
Eyüp Börk, a 47-year-old local, offers a unique perspective. He points out that most of the cemeteries have been emptied and advocates for the removal of the remaining tombstones to make way for a well-organized, safe park. Börk, reminding us that the majority of graves in the area are now empty, succinctly expresses his request by stating, 'We want a nice park.'
Ömer Faruk Dere, who spent his childhood in this neighborhood, shared his thoughts:
'We grew up in this neighborhood, we're the children of this place. It used to be a cemetery. We were aware of that. We used to play soccer here. The entire area was filled with graves. Later, they emptied the place. We could say that there are only a couple of graves left in the back, the rest are empty. It's affecting the children's psychology. They see graves. Of course, we would like it to be organized and turned into a nice park.'
