World's Most Expensive Cheese Costs 52,000 TL: It Is Not From Cows or Goat
The boundaries of luxury consumption and the world of gastronomy are being pushed further each day. The world's most expensive cheese, produced in the wetlands of northern Serbia and priced at approximately 1,000 euros per kilogram (around 52,000 TL), leaves those who hear about it in awe.
This cheese, named 'Pule', is produced in the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve, located 80 kilometers away from Serbia's capital, Belgrade. Its unique origin and challenging production process have caught the attention of gourmands and celebrities worldwide.
Here are some details about the 'Pule' cheese, which is worth a fortune per kilogram...
Donkey milk, by its very nature, bears no resemblance to cow or sheep milk.
The process of turning milk into cheese is quite challenging due to its naturally low fat and protein content. Moreover, a donkey can only produce about one liter of milk per day.
To produce just one kilogram of 'Pule' cheese, a full 25 liters of donkey milk and days of meticulous labor are required. This low yield coupled with the intense effort drives up the price of the cheese.
Donkey milk is actually not a remedy source that we are unfamiliar with.
This milk, known for its nutritional and cosmetic values since ancient times, is often mentioned in legends as the beauty secret of Egyptian Queen Cleopatra; it is said that the queen bathed in donkey milk to protect her skin. Today, this ancient elixir is being transformed into a luxury gastronomy product with the aim of preserving the endangered Balkan donkey breed.
For those intrigued, Pule is characterized by its delicate, slightly crumbly texture and a flavor that can be described as subtly nutty and earthy.
This delicacy, unlike traditional cheeses, boasts a completely unique flavor. Pule cheese, with its extremely limited annual production, is impossible to find in ordinary supermarkets or restaurants. Typically, this product is purchased directly from the farm in Zasavica, through special orders.
The globally renowned Serbian tennis champion, Novak Djokovic, leads the pack of numerous celebrated chefs, gourmets, and billionaires who are knocking on the farm's door to get a taste of this rare delicacy.
This farm, nestled within a conservation area, doesn't merely produce cheese; rejuvenating creams made from donkey milk, natural soaps, and fresh milk are also sold as luxurious souvenirs, gaining popularity among tourists from all over the world. So, would you be willing to part with your money for these?
