History of Zeugma: A Cultural Heritage from Commagene to Rome

History of Zeugma: A Cultural Heritage from Commagene to Rome

Zeugma was founded in 300 BC by Seleucus I. Nikator, one of the generals of Alexander the Great. The city, whose first name was Selevkeia Euphrates, was later named ‘Zeugma’ when it came under the rule of the Roman Empire.

The city became a major military base and trade centre during the Roman period as it was one of the important crossing points on the Euphrates River. Zeugma, whose population exceeded 80,000 in the 2nd century AD, was one of the richest cities on the eastern border of Rome.

Mythological Importance and Cultural Depth

Mythological Importance and Cultural Depth

Zeugma draws attention not only with its military and economic aspects but also with its mythological structure. Scenes from Greek mythology are frequently encountered in the mosaics found in the ancient city. One of the most well-known examples is the 'Gypsy Girl' mosaic, which is exhibited today at the Gaziantep Zeugma Mosaic Museum.

This work is surrounded by various mythological figures, from the festivities of Dionysus to the majesty of Poseidon ruling the seas. In this respect, Zeugma is almost an open-air archive for mythology lovers.

A large part of the ancient city of Zeugma faced the risk of being flooded with the construction of the Birecik Dam in the 2000s. However, thanks to the rescue excavations, many artefacts were recovered and moved to today's Gaziantep Zeugma Mosaic Museum.

Today, visitors can both visit the remaining structures of the ancient city and closely examine the traces of this magnificent civilisation in the museum.

You take a journey to the past in the light of the mosaics, frescoes and sculptures exhibited in the museum.
