Drunk Wasps Cause Alarm After Eating Fermented Fruit
As we transition into the final days of summer, the flurry of activity in nature has escalated to a new level. It has been observed that wasps, drawn to the fruits on the branches that have ripened and fermented over time, become disoriented due to the effects of naturally occurring alcohol, exhibiting behaviors out of the ordinary. Experts have issued a warning: 'Steer clear.'
What does it mean for bees to get drunk? Why do bumblebees become intoxicated?
Wasps that overindulged in fruit ended up intoxicated. Experts highlight that the movement abilities of the wasps, which consumed alcohol produced by the fermentation of fruit sugars, have changed. They emphasized that during this period, any nests encountered in nature or living spaces should absolutely not be interfered with.
Throughout the summer, worker wasps, tasked with transporting nectar to the colony and the queen wasp, see a decrease in their responsibilities towards the end of the season as the queen's nectar needs are met. With their duties within the colony lightened, the worker wasps turn to overripe, fermenting fruits high in sugar content. The alcohol in these foods affects the wasps' nervous system, making them more unstable, aggressive, and unpredictable.
Experts warn, 'do not approach'.
Bees do not limit their nesting areas to tree hollows or forested lands alone. They also inhabit areas intertwined with human life such as huts, exterior parts of buildings, toilet tanks, and even the inside parts of unused musical instruments. Officials from the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) emphasized that individual approaches should not be taken towards nests discovered in homes or gardens. Except for non-hazardous situations, it is advised that nests should be examined by professional teams and left to their natural course unless necessary.
