Unstoppable Ambition: German Marathoner Dom Stroh Completes 5km Run Inside an Airplane Bathroom
Sometimes, those who are into running can experience what we might call 'running addiction', a situation where discipline reaches somewhat extreme levels. For someone who has made running the focus of their life, completing that daily distance becomes not just a physical activity, but a ritual of mental refreshment and a sense of achievement.
German marathon runner Dom Stroh took this to an unusual extreme, attempting to run 5 km in an airplane bathroom to meet his running goal. His peculiar utilization of an 11-hour flight left spectators feeling dizzy.
You can watch it from here;
Does it truly benefit him to keep pacing in such a confined space?
The pressure and low humidity in an airplane cabin already put more strain on the heart than usual. Exerting effort in an extra oxygen-deprived area like a toilet doesn't build muscles, but rather imposes unnecessary oxidative stress on the body. Running gains significance through the reaction force received from the ground and forward acceleration. Jumping in place, on the other hand, increases the pressure on the joints while preventing the muscles from working at full capacity.
If the watch is in GPS mode, it would measure not his jumping in the toilet, but the speed of the plane (approximately 900 km/hour). In this case, he should appear to have completed 5 km not in an hour, but within seconds. If the watch is merely counting arm movements, it would 'fabricate' a distance for him because he swung his arm for an hour. This does not mean he has covered any real distance.
If running has become an obsession for this person, the only benefit would be to soothe his conscience by saying, 'I've met my goal for today.' If he claims something like 'run every day,' the psychological satisfaction of not skipping that day would suffice for him.
