21-Year-Old Earns High Salary in AI-Proof Carpentry Career Without College
At the tender age of 15, Hugo Helms, who was residing in the UK, decided that school was a waste of time and chose to drop out, turning his attention towards an apprenticeship instead. This decision proved fruitful as he managed to pull in an annual income of 50,000 pounds (approximately 3.5 million Turkish Lira). In an era where his peers are graduating from university with substantial debts and hunting for jobs, this young man has successfully established his own carpentry business. He works with the comforting assurance that artificial intelligence will not be able to take over his profession.
Hugo Helms, a 21-year-old residing in the city of Portsmouth, England, has become a source of inspiration for young people turning towards the craft sector, rejecting the traditional academic career path.
During his 9th grade drama class, Helms found himself frustrated with the constant emphasis on theory rather than practical training. With the support of his family, he decided to leave high school.
Completing his education at home and successfully passing the necessary Math and English GCSE exams, Helms embarked on an apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery in 2021.
After obtaining Level 1 and Level 2 qualification certificates, Hugo Helms, who started his own business, constructs Victorian-era cupboards, custom wardrobes, spiral staircases, kitchens, and roofs.
Helms, who points out that his peers are struggling to find jobs while graduating with an average student debt of 40,000 pounds, summarizes his situation as follows:
'I'm proving that you don't need a high school diploma or a university degree to make a decent living. Unless you're going to be a doctor, lawyer, or scientist, there's no need to waste three years of time and money at university. I'm saving up for my first house; this would have been impossible if I hadn't entered a profession at this age.'
In addition to the income he earned, Helms conveyed that knowing his job could not be taken over by artificial intelligence provided him with immense peace of mind. Drawing from his professional experience, he launched an initiative called Toolkit Conduct to impart his knowledge to the younger generation.
Through this project, Helms, who organizes workshops in schools and colleges, provides guidance to young people undergoing apprenticeship training. The young carpenter, who spent his first 18 months as an investment period, aims to grow Toolkit Conduct and increase his annual income to 100,000 pounds within the next five years.
Emphasizing that the perception of luxury life on social media does not reflect the real world, Helms invites young people to learn crafts with the words, 'Having a profession is not just a job, it is the backbone of humanity and should be seen as a field to be proud of.'
