While the excitement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is in full swing, our National Football Team bid farewell to the tournament.

After years of anticipation, our national team, who suffered a defeat against Australia in their first match at the World Cup, bid an early farewell to the tournament by losing 10-0 against Paraguay in what was considered a crucial match.

What truly broke the hearts of football fans, however, was not the scoreboard, but the performance on the pitch. Unable to prevent a goal in the very first minute of the game, Turkey, despite having a ball possession rate of 78%, 33 shots, and countless opportunities against an opponent who played with 10 men for nearly a half, could not find the back of the net. The balls bouncing off the post, the missed clear-cut chances, and the great disappointment that came with the final whistle stirred up social media.

In the aftermath of the match, not only football fans, but also influencers, commentators, broadcasters, well-known figures in the sports world, and politicians made successive posts. While some criticized the technical team, others drew attention to the missed opportunities. Let's take a look together at the most talked-about comments on social media following the defeat against Paraguay.

If someone were to ask me about the greatest achievement of Turkish football, I believe I would now say it's not the results on the field, but rather our ability to sell hope regardless of those results. That's because we are perhaps one of the few nations in the world that can market failure as success for such a long time.

It's like watching the same movie before every tournament. This time we're different, this time we're ready, a great new generation is on the rise. Then the tournament begins and a few weeks later, we're heading home.

In the past, people would genuinely feel upset when the national team lost. There was a missed opportunity at stake. Now, even losing has become institutionalized. The game ends, thank you messages are published, videos are prepared. It's as if we didn't get knocked out of the World Cup, but rather completed a new season product launch. Sometimes, football itself seems like a minor detail squeezed between advertising campaigns. We know which car a player drives, which watch brand they work with, which shampoo they use and which crackers they eat. Yet, we don't know how many one-on-one battles they've won in the last few games. Success used to bring money, now sometimes money comes before success. It's possible to live like a star without winning anything big, to be treated like a legend without touching a trophy.

Perhaps the biggest rival of Turkish football is not Germany, Spain, or Argentina. Maybe its biggest rival is the story it tells itself. Because we love telling football stories more than playing football. We write epics before the first whistle blows, and we're making semi-final plans before the group stage begins. Then the reality on the field slaps us in the face. We then turn around and talk about the referee, the turf, the fixture, the weather, the luck. Everything, except football.

Meanwhile, the great football nations of the world don't try to make themselves look bigger than they are. Because they really are big. We, on the other hand, sometimes forget to grow while trying to look big. The sad part is, this country has both talent and potential. But at some point, the weight of advertising contracts starts to be felt more than the weight of the jersey. That's the most ruthless aspect of football. Everyone is equal when they step onto the field. Follower counts, advertising deals, blue ticks, photoshopped poses, plenty of grandstanding, big zero bonuses lose their meaning. All that remains are character, struggle, courage, and desire. The World Cup is a tournament of these traits. The one who wants it more grows their story, not the one who talks more. We've heard the phrase 'We apologize to our citizens...' enough. For years, we've been trying to tell the story in front of the microphone instead of writing it on the field. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe that's why we hear the same sentence at the end of every tournament, 'We will look ahead...' We've been looking ahead for years. Maybe it's time to start looking in the mirror.
