But did you know it has a fascinating mythological story behind it? This tale revolves around Narcissus and Echo.

Narcissus was a remarkably handsome young man, so much so that every girl who laid eyes on him fell in love—including Echo!

Echo was a beautiful nymph, known for her enchanting voice and captivating charm. However, despite many suitors confessing their love for her, she always remained indifferent.

One day, while Narcissus was out hunting, Echo saw him and instantly fell in love—just like the others.

One day, while Narcissus was out hunting, Echo saw him and instantly fell in love—just like the others.

But the young man, cold and proud, rejected her love, just as he had done with so many before.

Heartbroken, Echo wasted away, consumed by her unrequited love, and eventually perished. Before dying, she uttered a curse:

'May he too fall in love but never be able to unite with his beloved, just like me!'

As she faded away, her body turned to stone, and her voice became the echo we hear when sound bounces off cliffs and mountains. It is said that when someone shouts their love or sorrow into the rocks, Echo responds through the very reverberations of their voice.

And what happened to Narcissus?

And what happened to Narcissus?

The Olympian gods, angered by his cruelty, decided to punish him. One day, while hunting, Narcissus grew thirsty and approached a river to drink. As he leaned over the water, he saw his own reflection—and, just like others before him, he fell deeply in love.

Enchanted by his own beauty, Narcissus became obsessed, unable to eat, drink, or look away from his reflection. Eventually, he too withered away and died, much like Echo.

But where he perished, a delicate flower bloomed—the narcissus.

The word "narcissist", used today to describe self-obsessed individuals, originates from this legend.

Interestingly, the medical term 'narcosis' (meaning numbness or unconsciousness) is also derived from the same myth!
