This material used in mining roads is not the familiar molasses we consume for breakfast. It's a molasses-like by-product called molasses, which is left after the crystals are separated during sugar production.

This substance, which resembles molasses with its dark color and dense consistency, has been used for years as animal feed or for industrial fermentation. However, researchers have noticed that the sticky nature of molasses could solve a major problem in mines.

The Sticky Secret of Sugar: How Does It Hold Dust?

In open-pit mines, hundreds of tons of trucks move non-stop. This heavy traffic causes the ground to be crushed and tiny dust particles to mix into the air in the form of giant clouds.

This is where molasses comes into play. The sugar-based components in its content work like a natural adhesive, binding the small dust particles on the road surface to each other. Moreover, it traps the moisture in the air, allowing the ground to stay slightly moist for a much longer period. In short, the dust cannot rise even when heavy trucks pass and sticks to the ground.

Normally, water is constantly sprayed on the roads to suppress dust in mines. However, in hot and dry regions, this water evaporates within minutes and the process has to be repeated dozens of times a day.

This molasses-based eco-friendly solution significantly reduces the evaporation rate of water. Thus, millions of liters of fresh water are saved from being wasted and the mine roads do not constantly turn into mud.

 2025 Research Settled It

Although this interesting method is not a new idea, new research published in 2025 in the world's most respected science platforms such as Nature and ScienceDirect took the issue to a whole new level.

Scientists tested new formulas that maximize the moisture retention and binding properties of molasses under real mine conditions, under heavy vehicles. The results were quite striking: Molasses-based mixtures last much longer compared to chemical dust suppressants and do not harm the environment (groundwater or soil) at all.

 An Invisible Shield

So, molasses is not really poured on the mine roads; molasses, which has been seen as 'waste' for years, solves a serious environmental problem.

Scientists are now trying to turn this dark liquid into an indispensable standard for cleaner air in mines, worker health (against diseases such as silicosis), and water conservation.
