Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that comprehensive ground reinforcement work was carried out on the seabed before the towers of the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge were erected, explaining the unseen aspect of the project.

368 Steel Piles Used on the Seabed

According to the information provided by Minister Uraloğlu, the carrying capacity of the seabed was first increased to ensure the safe placement of the tower foundations. In this context, 165 steel piles were used in the tower foundation on the Asian side, and 203 steel piles were used in the tower foundation on the European side.

A total of 368 steel piles, approximately 2.5 meters in diameter and 40 to 46 meters long, were placed on the seabed. Uraloğlu described this work as 'We created a forest of steel on the seabed.'

Foundations Were Placed on the Special Gravel Bed

After the completion of ground strengthening processes, a special gravel bed about 3 meters thick was prepared for caisson foundations. Then, giant reinforced concrete caissons were moved to their positions in the sea and were placed on the prepared ground with millimetric calculations by taking water into them in a controlled manner.

Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that the bridge is not only composed of the part seen over the sea, stating that the ground improvement carried out on the seabed, steel pile application, gravel bedding, and caisson placement processes constitute the most critical stages of the structure.

Uraloğlu said,

'There is a meticulously planned engineering work under every meter of the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge seen on the sea. Thanks to the strong foundation system we created, we ensured that our bridge serves safely for many years.'
