Project Turns Used Baby Diapers Into Recycled Material
A noteworthy recycling project for disposable baby diapers has been initiated in Brazil. This pilot application, brought to life through a collaboration between KimberlyClark's Huggies brand and Boomera, aims to separately collect and repurpose used baby diapers accumulated in nurseries.
The project strives to provide a new solution for this type of waste, which is considered difficult to recycle and constitutes a large volume in cities.
Used baby diapers are being collected separately.
Diapers possess a far more complex structure compared to traditional recyclable materials such as paper, glass, metal, or clean plastic. Their collection, transportation, storage, and processing require special attention due to the variety of materials and organic waste they contain once used.
For this reason, instead of initiating the project directly from households, it was implemented in nurseries. As diapers accumulate more regularly and densely in nurseries, the collection process can proceed more controlled compared to homes.
Schools participating in the program were informed about how used diapers should be separated, stored, and delivered. The aim was to ensure that diapers enter a separate recycling route without mixing with regular trash.
The aim is to produce 100 tons of baby diapers in the first year.
KimberlyClark announced that approximately 100 tons of diapers could be recycled in the first year of the program. The pilot phase was initiated to assess the feasibility of the system and to evaluate whether it could be expanded in the future.
The collected diapers in the project are processed to be converted into raw material that can be used in the production of new products. Thus, a product that is seen as waste after a few hours of use can be reintegrated into the production chain.
However, the most striking aspect of the program is that it forces people to reconsider a type of waste that is generally perceived as non-recyclable. The ability to convert used diapers into raw material has brought to the forefront the question of which other everyday items that end up in the trash could be repurposed.
