On August 14, 1996, 48-year-old Karen Wetterhahn, working at Dartmouth College, was researching the effects of toxic metals on human health. That day, a few drops of dimethylmercury she was using during her work in the lab splashed onto her glove.

The substance Wetterhahn was using was not an ordinary laboratory chemical. Dimethylmercury was an extremely volatile and toxic organic mercury compound. Moreover, Wetterhahn was using protective equipment considered standard in laboratories at that time while working with this substance.

However, research conducted after the accident would reveal the real danger. Because dimethylmercury could pass through latex gloves in less than 20 seconds. In some tests, this time was seen to be less than 15 seconds. In other words, the gloves were not as strong a barrier as Wetterhahn thought.

As the months went by, the picture changed. About five months later, Wetterhahn's balance began to deteriorate. She was bumping into doors while walking, having difficulty speaking and was unable to pronounce words correctly. Vision and hearing problems also emerged in a short time.

 She Learned the Truth in the Hospital

Tests performed on Wetterhahn, who was hospitalized on January 20, 1997, revealed the cause of her illness. The mercury level in her blood had reached 4,000 micrograms/liter. The level of mercury in her urine had also significantly increased.

Dimethylmercury can transform into methylmercury in the body and can cause severe damage in the central nervous system by crossing the blood-brain barrier. Despite treatment, Wetterhahn's neurological condition rapidly worsened. She fell into a coma in February.

She lost her life on June 8, 1997, about 10 months after the accident.
