The Ministry of Trade in Turkey has taken decisive action on a long-standing issue in the jewelry industry that has even experts struggling to differentiate: lab-grown (synthetic) diamonds. The 'Regulation on Jewelry Trade', prepared to prevent consumer victimization, has been published in the Official Gazette and put into effect. This new regulation ushers in radical changes, particularly in gold and diamond shopping, that are set to disrupt established norms.

Synthetic and natural stones cannot share the same display case.

Synthetic and natural stones cannot share the same display case.

In recent years, synthetic diamonds, produced in laboratories to closely mimic the real thing, have been causing significant misinformation in the market. These products, which are nearly impossible to distinguish from natural diamonds, have been causing an increase in complaints due to being sold at high prices as if they were natural stones.

With the new regulation that has come into effect, there is now a mandatory transparency requirement for all precious stones produced through human intervention. From now on, jewelers will not be able to display lab-produced stones in the same showcase or mixed with natural ones. They will be required to set up completely separate sections in their stores for these products.

It will be stated everywhere from labels to advertisements.

The regulation is not limited to just storefront displays. To prevent misleading consumers, clear declarations will be required at all stages involving lab-grown stones. Accordingly, it will be clearly readable on:

Product labels and certificates,

Sales invoices,

Websites,

All kinds of advertising, promotional and brochure materials,

that the product is 'synthetic', 'lab-grown' or 'artificially produced'.

The new legislation not only affects the sale of loose stones, but also directly impacts processed jewelry products that are in high demand in the market. All precious stones set on gold rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings will be subject to this rule. Thus, consumers will be able to tell at first glance whether the diamond on their jewelry came from nature or was produced in a lab. With this step, the Ministry aims to reestablish a trust environment in the jewelry sector and to prevent deceptive off-the-record sales.
