Giant Bridge Project Underway to Connect Two Cities and Replace Ferries
The completion of a massive highway project, set to connect the cities of Penedo in the state of Alagoas and Neópolis in the state of Sergipe, is nearing its final stages. The project, which is situated over the São Francisco River, one of Brazil's most significant waterways, has surpassed 50% of its physical completion. Funded by the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), the project is slated to be completed and operational by December 2026.
The fact that direct transitions between the two cities were entirely dependent on ferry services was causing serious disruptions in regional logistics and daily transportation.
With the inauguration of the new bridge, which has a total investment fluctuating between 205 and 207 million R$, and spans 1.18 kilometers, the two banks of the river will be united by a continuous highway network for the first time.
The assembly of 120 giant beams, essential for the superstructure, has commenced in the project conducted under the coordination of the National Transportation Infrastructure Department (DNIT), where over 170 workers are tirelessly toiling on the construction site.

The bridge is being constructed with a length of 1.18 kilometers and a width of 18 meters.
The 18-meter width will accommodate not only motor vehicle traffic, but also pedestrian paths, bicycle lanes, and safety lanes.
To ensure that ship transportation in the São Francisco River is not affected, the bridge's central span is designed to be 150 meters and its height is 30 meters. This will allow large ships to pass under the bridge with ease.
The bridge is part of the BR349 highway project. Within the scope of the project, asphalt renewal and marking works are also being carried out on the 126.9-kilometer road network on the Alagoas side.
With the placement of the beams, the silhouette of the bridge begins to emerge over the river, promising to revolutionize the entire logistics map of the Lower São Francisco region once completed.
In the remaining stages, the placement of concrete slab panels, asphalt paving, construction of access roads, and the installation of lighting and safety barriers will be completed.
Thanks to this permanent road connection, which will eliminate ferry waiting times, freight transportation between the two states will become more predictable and faster. The project is expected to facilitate local people's access to trade, health, and educational services, while also providing a significant boost to regional tourism.
