New Desert Military Base Rivals the Pentagon
Egypt has marked a historic turning point in its strategy to modernize its defense infrastructure and centralize military command. The new state strategic command headquarters, named 'The Octagon,' has been officially opened by President Abdel Fattah ElSisi in the New Administrative Capital to the east of Cairo. This colossal complex, challenging the U.S. Department of Defense headquarters, the Pentagon, boasts the distinction of being one of the largest military centers in the world.
This colossal facility, officially known as the State Strategic Command Headquarters, spans a staggering 22,000 acres.
According to the State Information Service (SIS) of Egypt, the complex, composed of 13 integrated strategic and logistic zones, holds the position of being the largest defense and administrative center in the Middle East.
Authorities describe the Octagon not as a traditional military headquarters, but rather as a 'miniature administrative and defense city' that consolidates command functions, logistics, training facilities, and national emergency management under a single secure roof.
The headquarters consists of eight interconnected octagonal buildings, surrounding two central command structures.
Symbolizing unity and integrated command, this design seamlessly blends the aesthetic elements of traditional Egyptian architecture with modern military infrastructure and digital technologies.
The technical infrastructure of the complex is entirely designed according to the concept of future warfare:
C4I/AI Integration: Advanced command, control, communication, and artificial intelligence systems that enable real-time information sharing and decision-making at the speed of light.
Joint Operation Capability: Flawless coordination among all branches of the armed forces.
Crisis Management: Instant data sharing between military and civilian institutions in national emergencies, disasters, and security crises.
The Octagon Complex is not only compared to the famous Pentagon headquarters in the U.S. due to its architectural structure, but also due to the strategic role it assumes.
Just like the Pentagon, Egypt is consolidating all its military leadership, operational planning, intelligence network, and secure communication into a single hub.
With the inauguration of this critical link in its plan to relocate key sovereign institutions to the New Administrative Capital, the Egyptian government aims to maximize its military preparedness and establish a technology-focused defense shield against evolving regional/global security threats.
