NBA Rocked by Betting Scandal: Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier Arrested
In the United States, a joint operation was carried out by the FBI and New York prosecutors as part of a large-scale investigation into illegal sports betting. It was reported that Chauncey Billups, the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Terry Rozier, a player for the Miami Heat, were taken into custody during the operation. According to CBS, federal authorities scrutinized suspicious betting activity during a game played by Rozier in a Charlotte Hornets jersey in March 2023.
The significantly below-average scoring of the high-scoring player caught the attention of the review.

The investigation's focal point was the match in which Rozier could only stay on the court for nine minutes due to pain in his right foot, scoring a mere five points. This was notably different from his previous performances where he would typically play for an average of 35 minutes and produce around 21 points. New York prosecutors and FBI Director Kash Patel have announced that they will hold a press conference to share the details of the investigation with the public.
He claimed to have been injured while playing for an average of 35 minutes, yet he managed to finish the game in just 10 minutes.

According to a report by CBS, betting companies operating in numerous states detected unusual betting activity related to Rozier's performance in the Charlotte Hornets-New Orleans Pelicans match played in March 2023. It was noted that a professional gambler placed a total of $13,759 across 30 different coupons in just 46 minutes. This sudden and high-volume flow of bets led the companies to suspend wagers on Rozier's points, rebounds, and assist statistics. In the said match, Rozier only played for 10 minutes and was unable to continue due to an injury in his foot.
Chauncey Billups was apprehended during an operation conducted over poker.

Billups was accused in a separate indictment of assisting in manipulating poker games by deceiving players with the promise of playing against celebrities. According to prosecutors, this scheme also involved several organized crime families in New York.
Although the arrests stemmed from two different indictments, some defendants were charged in both cases. Among these is former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones. Miami Heat, Portland Trail Blazers, NBA officials, and Rozier's attorney James Trusty have yet to comment on the matter.
Rozier's performance in a Miami jersey once again raised eyebrows.
