Brought to Control Rabbits, Caused Disaster: World-First Ferret Eradication on Rathlin

The story of the island began in the 19th century... The invasion started by rats that reached the island by boats, turned into an ecological crisis when it combined with a wrong intervention made by human hands years later. Today, Rathlin Island, which is located off the coast of Northern Ireland and is one of the most important natural areas of the United Kingdom, is the scene of a great struggle to compensate for these historical mistakes and save the wildlife.

Here are the details.

Rabbits and Invaders Getting Out of Control

Rabbits and Invaders Getting Out of Control

In the 19th century, rats that arrived on Rathlin Island by ship began to pose a significant threat to ground-nesting birds. By the 1980s, stoats were deliberately introduced to the island in the hope of controlling not only the rats but also the rabbit population, which had spiraled out of control. However, nature responded to this human intervention in an unexpected way:

  • The predatory stoats, instead of targeting the challenging rabbits, turned to the much easier prey of ground-nesting seabirds.

  • This situation brought the internationally significant seabird colonies, which viewed the island as a safe breeding ground, to the brink of extinction.

  • In 2017, there were devastating instances where a single stoat killed 27 puffins (sea parrots) in just two days.

Another Intervention from Humankind: What is the Life Raft Project?

Another Intervention from Humankind: What is the Life Raft Project?

The Life Raft project, supported by a large fund of 4.5 million pounds in 2021 to save the sea birds and the fragile ecosystem of the island, was implemented. The main strategy of this five-year rescue effort was to completely cleanse the island of invasive species:

  • In 2023, more than 400 mink traps and 110 surveillance cameras were set up on the island, which was thoroughly scanned, and the first winter caught 98 minks.

  • Nearly 7,000 handmade bait traps were placed around the island at intervals of every 250 meters to end the mouse threat.

Meet Woody

One of the biggest heroes of this operation in the rugged and challenging terrain of Rathlin Island was a red Labrador detection dog named Woody. Specially trained Woody played a critical role in ensuring the operation's definite success by tracking the last minks on the island with his sensitive nose.

Although he lost one of his eyes due to a thorn prick during his off-duty times, his nose continued to work flawlessly. Woody, who did not retire after the invasion ended, continues to protect the island today as the chief 'biosecurity dog' inspecting cargoes, hay, and feed sacks arriving on the island.

They Made a First in the World!

As a result of the studies conducted on Rathlin Island, no stoats have been seen on the island since October 2023. Moreover, no rats have been spotted since June 2025. This significant victory has earned Rathlin the title of the first island in the world to successfully eradicate stoats completely.

This project, accomplished with the support not only of nature conservation agencies but also of the island's residents who are delighted to safely let their chickens out in the garden again, serves as a global case study for all other islands around the world, from New Zealand to the UK, that are combating invasive species.

A Bitter Irony: We Are Again Protecting Nature from Ourselves

The great ecological battle being waged today, costing millions of pounds, is not against the natural workings of nature, but against the faulty 'solutions' produced by humanity in the past. In short, humanity is striving to protect nature from the disasters it has created, rather than saving it.
