In the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş, a land at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters, where there was no water source, had been vacant for 70 years. That was until 17-year-old Ayşe Umay Bahçıvan initiated a project that would change the fate of this land. The work that started with 500 apricot saplings has now reached a product of 4 tons. The project developed by the young student brought international success and first place to Turkey.

The land located at about 2,000 meters altitude in the Yalıntaş neighborhood of Elbistan was not used for agricultural production for many years. The biggest problem in the region was the lack of water.

Only 17 Years Old: She Managed to Create a Miracle in Waterless Soil

Although there were attempts to grow apricots in the past, the desired yield was not achieved. Ayşe Umay Bahçıvan, a 17-year-old student at Robert College, approached the problem from a different angle.

In the project, leonardite fertilizer obtained from the thermal power plant in the region was used to increase the water holding capacity of the soil.

The 500 apricot saplings planted five years ago started to bear fruit over time. Approximately 4 tons of apricots were obtained in the first significant harvest. The project, which started with 500 trees, attracted the attention of local producers. With the proliferation of the project, today it started to be mentioned about a capacity of approximately 10 thousand trees.

In other words, a small trial conducted on a land that remained vacant for years has turned into a broader agricultural production model over time.

In this respect, the project also sets a striking example, especially in a period when water resources are becoming increasingly critical.

Crowned with the Championship of Turkey

The project developed by the young student won the first place in the High School Students Climate Change Project Competition in Turkey. The success was not limited to Turkey. The project won a silver award among 950 projects in the competition held in the USA, and a bronze award in the competition in the UK.
