Is It Harmful to Sit in the Closet for a Long Time?

Is It Harmful to Sit in the Closet for a Long Time?

If you are distracted by your phone instead of getting up quickly when you sit on the toilet, you may unknowingly stay in the same position for minutes. Moreover, straining when defecation becomes difficult can make the situation even worse.

According to experts, the formation of hemorrhoids is not solely due to the use of the toilet. However, sitting for a long time and straining poses a significant risk. Especially in people who suffer from chronic constipation, these habits can increase the pressure on the veins in the anal area.

So, Should We Quit Using the Toilet?

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Bük states that the traditional Turkish toilet is more advantageous in terms of defecation position. In a western-style toilet, placing a small stool under the feet and lifting the knees slightly above the hips can facilitate defecation.

So, the issue is not just about 'western or traditional toilet?'. It is also very important not to prolong the time spent on the toilet and not to strain unnecessarily during defecation.

Don't Take Your Phone to the Bathroom

Don't Take Your Phone to the Bathroom

Perhaps this is the easiest habit to change.

The phone taken to the bathroom with the thought of 'I'll just check for two minutes' can inadvertently extend the time spent in the bathroom. Therefore, finishing your business and getting up is one of the simple precautions that can be taken to prevent hemorrhoids.

If there is recurring bleeding, pain, swelling, or any other complaint in the anal area, it is necessary to get a doctor's evaluation instead of directly attributing it to hemorrhoids.

If You Have Constipation Problems, Don't Strain

According to experts, straining more in the bathroom is not the solution if defecation is not occurring. On the contrary, repeated straining can increase the pressure on the veins in the anal area, triggering hemorrhoid complaints.

Therefore, instead of sitting in the bathroom for a long time or straining yourself, it is necessary to solve the underlying cause of constipation and change the toilet habit. Especially if there is recurring bleeding, pain, or swelling, it is important to consult a specialist without ignoring the complaints. Do not neglect these symptoms for your health.
