Microplastic Warning in Tea Bags: Billions of Particles Released When Exposed to Hot Water!
The results of a study on the bagged teas consumed by millions of people every day have drawn attention. Researchers at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain have revealed that some commercial tea bags can release millions, even billions of micro and nanoplastic particles when they come into contact with hot water.
So, what are we actually drinking along with bagged tea?
Here are the details.
Billions of Particles Detected in Bagged Teas!
Researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain analyzed different tea bags made of polypropylene, nylon6, and cellulose-based in a laboratory environment. The results revealed that a large number of micro and nano-sized particles were released from the bags when they came into contact with hot water.
The study found that bags containing polypropylene could release approximately 1.2 billion particles per milliliter, cellulose-based bags could release approximately 135 million particles, and bags containing nylon6 could release approximately 8.18 million particles.
Particles Reach the Cell Nucleus
The most striking part of the study was the experiments conducted on the possible behaviors of the particles released by hot water in the human body. Researchers observed that the micro and nanoplastics obtained could be absorbed by human intestinal cells in a laboratory environment.
Especially in mucus-producing intestinal cells, more accumulation was observed, and it was noted that some particles could reach the cell nucleus. The research team emphasized that these findings are important in understanding the movement of microplastics in the human body.
It is Not Yet Known Whether It is Harmful to Health!
The researchers of the UAB Mutagenesis Group, Alba GarcíaRodríguez, Alba Hernández Bonilla, Ricardo Marcos Dauder, and Gooya Banaei, pointed out that plastic-based tea bags could be one of the sources of micro and nanoplastic exposure.
According to experts, these results do not show that bagged tea consumption directly causes disease. However, it reveals the need for a closer examination of microplastic exposure from food packaging. Researchers indicate the need for more studies to understand the long-term health effects.
Let's also mention that some experts recommend stainless steel filters and reusable filters.
