The Mysterious Room in Karahantepe Will Be Opened for the First Time!

A new phase that excites the world of archaeology is being entered in the ongoing excavations at Karahantepe in Şanlıurfa. Within the scope of the Stone Hills Project, the mysterious room located inside the rectangular structure, which was partially revealed last year, will be opened this season.

Karahantepe, which attracts attention with its similarities to Göbeklitepe, has so far unearthed more than 250 'T' shaped standing stones, human figurines, and different animal depictions belonging to the Neolithic period.

One of the most striking points of this year's excavations in the settlement, which is considered to have a history of approximately 12,000 years, will be the room covered with large flat stones.

The coordinator of the Stone Hills Project and the head of the Karahantepe Excavation, Prof. Dr. Necmi Karul, stated that the structure, which is thought to have been built for special purposes, could hold significant surprises.

Karul, who stated that no excavation could be carried out inside due to the entrance of the mysterious room covered with large stones opening to approximately 1 meter of shallow fill, expressed that a detailed examination will be made in the room with the removal of the top cover stones this season.

Karahantepe Could Shed Light on Archaeological History

Karahantepe, which has attracted worldwide attention with the human statues and extraordinary architectural details revealed before, is expected to shed light on the unknowns of the Neolithic period with the new season's work.

In the excavations that will continue until October, the artifacts that will come out of the room closed with stones are among the most curious topics in the world of archaeology.
