Jeweler Unmasks a Fake Gold Chain: Watch the Moment He Detects the Deception With Expert Precision
As you may well know, gold has been dominating the economic headlines in recent days. Influenced by global events, gold continues to spring new surprises on its investors daily. The rapid surge in gold prices has also sparked a wave of fraudulent activity. Whenever gold prices peak, we encounter a variety of new scam tactics, with jewelers often bearing the brunt of these deceptions.
A jeweler recently shared his experiences of uncovering the truth when presented with counterfeit gold.
You can watch it from here;
How exactly can one determine if gold is counterfeit?
Rubbing (Touchstone): Initially, the jewelry is rubbed against a black, hard stone known as a 'touchstone'. This action leaves a mark on the stone from the metal.
Acid Application: The liquid that is brushed on in the video is a special mixture containing nitric acid. Different concentrations of acid are used for different gold carats (14k, 18k, 22k).
Reaction:
Real Gold: When the acid is applied, the mark on the stone neither disappears nor changes color. Gold, being a 'noble' metal, does not easily react with these acids.
Fake/Copper: As seen in the video, the moment the acid is applied, the mark on the stone starts to fizz and dissolve, darken, or take on a greenish hue. This indicates that the necklace is not gold, but likely gold-plated copper or another inexpensive metal.
