Free Electricity for 3 Hours a Day in 3 States
As of July 1, the newly implemented 'Solar Sharer' program in Australia is offering millions of households the opportunity to enjoy 3 hours of free electricity daily. However, experts are issuing a warning: for those who don't alter their consumption habits, this plan could potentially double their bills.
The Australian government has taken a revolutionary step with the aim of relieving the grid during midday hours, when renewable energy is most abundant and inexpensive.
Households in Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia equipped with smart meters will be able to benefit from the 'Solar Sharer' plan as of July 1st. This plan includes 3 hours of free electricity per day. A similar program, the Midday Energy Savings, will kick off in the state of Victoria starting from October 1st.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen emphasized that the primary aim of the plan is to ensure everyone benefits equally from solar energy. He stated, 'At times when the sun is at its brightest and electricity prices drop to negative values, all consumers, regardless of whether they have solar panels at home or not, and irrespective of whether they are tenants or homeowners, should be able to take advantage of this inexpensive and abundant energy.'
What are the Free Electricity Hours and Conditions?
The free electricity hours have been determined according to the states within the scope of the program as follows:
New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria: Between 11:00 – 14:00
South Australia: Between 12:00 – 15:00
Significant Limit: Free usage is not unlimited. A daily upper limit of 24 kWh (approximately the daily consumption of a household of five) is being applied. Any usage beyond this limit will be charged at the standard rate.
Moreover, to benefit from the program, it's mandatory to have a smart meter. Consumers without a smart meter will mostly be able to request this meter from their energy providers free of charge. However, those connected to private networks such as apartment blocks or shopping centers, as well as small retailers with less than 1,000 customers, will be excluded from the program.
While nearly half of the Australians surveyed showed interest in the program, experts are issuing serious warnings that it may not be beneficial for everyone.
The Energy Consumers Association of Australia (ECA) is drawing attention to the possibility that energy companies may significantly increase their tariffs during the evening or night hours to offset the cost of the free electricity they provide during the day. Officials from the ECA caution, 'We don't want people to assume that their bills will decrease just because they switch to this plan, as the outcome could be quite the opposite for those who don't change their consumption habits.'
Independent energy consultant Tim Forcey also points out that merely running the dishwasher or washing machine during the day won't be enough to lower the bill, as the high charges during the rest of the day could easily offset these savings.
Who Will Profit from This Plan, and How?
According to the Australian Energy Council, the Solar Sharer plan will provide the most benefits to the following groups:
- Those working from home,
- Individuals with a battery (storage) system at home,
- Owners of electric vehicles (EV).
Tips from Experts to Save Energy:
Shift Your Energy: Schedule your washing, drying, and dishwashing machines to operate during free hours using a timer.
Preheat/Cool Your Home: Heat or cool your house during free hours, thereby minimizing the use of air conditioning or heating in the evening hours.
Use Fast Charging: Opt for fast charging devices instead of slow charging to significantly charge your electric vehicle during this 3-hour window.
Although Solar Sharer is a government-backed reference plan, it's not the only and certainly not the cheapest option on the market.
Special retailer campaigns such as GloBird Energy's 'Four4Free', which offers four hours of free electricity, or AGL's 'Three for Free' in South Australia, are already available.
Authorities recommend that consumers choose the plan that best suits their consumption profiles by using the official comparison sites of federal and state governments, and request the best price offer at least once every 100 days from their retailers.
