Feast for Students: South Korean School's Incredible Free Lunch Goes Viral as the Gold Standard of Cafeterias

A child's mind is primed for learning only once their stomach is satisfied. How is the education system structured in South Korea?

South Korea is among the countries that have placed education at the core of their state policy. Consistently ranking high in PISA exams, Korea believes that success is built not only in the classroom but also in the cafeteria, the sports hall, and beyond the school. Free and quality lunches are part of this holistic approach.

The educational process in South Korea is based on a rather long and disciplined schedule that prioritizes academic achievement above all else. A student's daily routine typically starts around 8:00 in the morning. Following the standard school hours, the day continues with mandatory evening study sessions at school and private courses called Hagwon, which run into the late hours of the night. The majority of high school students wrap up their day around 10:00 or midnight. This pace means that students dedicate approximately 12 to 16 hours of their day directly to educational activities.

The primary goal of the system is to prepare students for a single, crucial exam called Suneung, which determines their future careers. The government, aware of the impact of physical nutrition on learning, provides balanced meals focused on protein and vegetables for free at school. However, in this system, mental endurance is as important as the fatigue brought on by intense competition. These long working hours are generally accepted nationwide, as education is seen more as a national race and societal duty rather than individual development.
