The Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines has announced through X that a significant part of the national electricity grid has been compromised, leading to severe issues in energy production.

The ministry's statement revealed that planned power outages would be enforced during peak electricity usage hours, affecting roughly 70% of the country. It further elaborated:

'Unit 6 of the Nuevitas Thermal Power Plant, Unit 3 of the Rente Plant, and the fuel oil power plant have been disconnected from the National Energy System. Moreover, due to malfunctions or maintenance, 9 out of the 16 thermal power plant units in the country are currently inoperative.'

Cuban media reports suggest that the primary causes of the issues plaguing the national energy system are fuel shortages and challenges in obtaining spare parts essential for power plants, largely due to the US embargo.

On January 30, Donald Trump put pen to paper on a presidential decree, proposing the levying of additional customs duties on all goods originating from countries that either supply or sell oil to Cuba.

In contrast, the White House clarified that the underlying aim of this decision was to safeguard the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States against the 'detrimental policies and activities' of Cuba.

Trump, on February 1, announced that dialogues had been kick-started to revamp the oil supply with the Cuban government. However, this claim was promptly debunked by the Cuban side.

In the wake of these developments, the Cuban government sprung into action, implementing emergency measures to keep the system running in the absence of an external oil supply.
