China Builds World's Longest Outdoor Escalator at Height of an 80-Story Building
With its suspended trains passing through residential buildings and the world's deepest subway stations that have left the architectural world in awe, the city of Chongqing in China has added yet another marvel to its portfolio. This time, Chongqing has begun to host the world's longest outdoor escalator system.
Dubbed as the "Wushan Goddess Escalator," this colossal system spans almost a kilometer, with a total length of 905 meters.
The vertical height difference between the base and the summit of the staircase is precisely 242.14 meters. This roughly corresponds to the height of an 80-story skyscraper.
This colossal outdoor transit complex is not merely a collection of escalators; it functions almost like a public transportation network in its own right.
The system consists of the following components:
21 escalators
8 elevators
4 moving walkways
2 pedestrian bridges and 2 overpasses
This colossal project, which connects the upper and lower sections of Shennv Boulevard in the Gaotang region of Wushan County, has significantly eased the lives of the local people.
Due to the city's challenging hilly terrain, the travel time that previously took a full hour on foot has been reduced to a mere 20 minutes thanks to this escalator system. This system, which has maximized the travel comfort and efficiency of Chongqing's residents, has provided a significant logistical relief to the city.
As of February, the Wushan Goddess Escalator, which has commenced its trial operation, is asking for a nominal fee of 3 Yuan (approximately 0.4 Dollars) per ride from travelers.
Authorities will decide, following this trial period, whether the system will continue on a fixed fee basis or under a different tariff. Chongqing, known for its most extraordinary city architecture, has once again reinforced its title as the 'city of impossible designs' with this latest move.
