Abandoned as Diseased, Turned Into £87M Fortune: The Story of a Forgotten Mexican Farm
Would you buy a farm that has lost its coconut trees due to disease, unproductive and abandoned? Mexican couple Mónica Hernández and Aníbal González did just that about 30 years ago. The nearly 140-hectare land, which seemed almost useless, is now worth millions of pounds.
Here is the farm that turned from ruin to fortune in 30 years.
They Bought an Abandoned Land and Forgot About It in a Corner!
The approximately 346-acre (140-hectare) land located in the El Cuyo region of the Yucatan Peninsula was previously used for coconut production. However, a plant disease wiped out the palm trees in the region, ending the farm's old order. What remained was a vast land that had largely lost its economic value.
After purchasing the land, Mónica Hernández and Aníbal González did not attempt to turn it back into an intensive agricultural area. Instead, over time, dead trees were cleared, and the natural vegetation of the region was allowed to return. This process, which at first glance seemed like nothing was being done, completely changed the fate of the land over the years.
Nature Filled the Void Itself
As the years passed, the land did not just become greener; it also transformed into a habitat for various species. The coasts and wetlands of the region began to host a large number of bird species, primarily flamingos.
Sea turtles also became significant visitors to the coasts. Dolphins can be spotted in the open sea. Thus, what was once a failed production area turned into a vast natural habitat with limited human intervention.
The approximately 4-mile long coastline of the land is one of the significant parts of this transformation. Today, this place is not just a valuable piece of land with a structure on it; it's a special area where marine and terrestrial life intertwines.
Now Valued at 87 Million Pounds
The approximately 140-hectare land that the couple bought years ago is now worth about 87 million pounds. Of course, the value of the land is not determined solely by its location or size. The natural ecosystem that has formed here also sets the area apart from an ordinary farm.
An eco-friendly tourism project for the land has also been approved. According to the plan, an ecoresort consisting of 64 villas, where renewable energy and natural materials will be used, is envisaged in the region.
The couple, however, does not want to completely part with the land. Even if the sale takes place, they plan to reserve a small portion for themselves.
