Workers Digging a Backyard Well Stumble Upon a Massive 510kg Fortune
In Sri Lanka, workers digging a well in the backyard of a house stumbled upon the world's largest cluster of star sapphires, purely by chance. Unearthed in the region known as the 'City of Gems', Ratnapura, this colossal stone weighs approximately 510 kilograms (around 2.5 million carats). It is estimated that the value of this massive gem could reach up to 100 million dollars in the international market.
Mr. Gamage, a third-generation jeweler who stumbled upon a colossal treasure in his backyard, stated that the process of officially analyzing, authorizing, and cleaning the discovered stone, which was initially brought to his attention by a well digger, took more than a year.
During the cleaning process, it was confirmed that some of the stones that fell from the cluster were indeed high-quality star sapphires. Due to this fortuitous discovery, it was christened the 'Serendipity Sapphire'.
Famed gemologist Dr. Gamini Zoysa could not hide his astonishment at the magnitude of the discovery, stating, 'I've never seen such a large specimen before. This gem was likely formed approximately 400 million years ago.'
