He Built a House From Bottles and Cartons, and Now Everyone Is Flocking to See It
Alfredo Santa Cruz and his family, residing in the city of Puerto Iguazu in Argentina, took a stand against environmental pollution with an extraordinary project that is nothing short of inspiring. The family, eager to make use of discarded waste, utilized thousands of pieces of rubbish to construct a fully habitable, aesthetically pleasing, and eco-friendly house. This structure, named 'La casa ecológica de botellas' (The Ecological Bottle House), rapidly became one of the most intriguing points of interest in the region.
The construction of the house involved the use of precisely 1200 plastic PET bottles and 1300 Tetra-Pak beverage cartons.
At first glance, this house, which stands out from ordinary structures, softens and admits daylight thanks to its transparent plastic walls. This creates an atmosphere of illumination inside the house that is both natural and enchanting. Contrary to what one might think, the building, which draws attention with its engineering details, is completely waterproof against harsh weather conditions and boasts an extremely durable architecture.
The fundamental philosophy behind the project is to break the harmful consumption patterns that humanity inflicts on nature.
Embarking on their journey with the belief that 'nothing should be disposable and everything should find a second use,' the Santa Cruz family has designed a significant portion of their household items using repurposed materials. Waste bottles in the house have been transformed into flower pots at times, and at other times, into designer shower curtains.
The Ecological Bottle House has transcended its role as merely a shelter. The house, equipped with a self-sustaining agricultural area and a solar-powered water heating system, has been established in collaboration with local government and schools. Students in the city visit this house to learn about waste management and the importance of environmental conservation.
Transcending boundaries with its architecture and story, the house now serves as a museum open to visitors.
The tours are personally guided by Alfredo Santa Cruz himself. Visitors have the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs made from materials recycled by the family. The Santa Cruz family emphasizes that the aim of this tour is not to showcase personal achievement; rather, it's to demonstrate how feasible it is to protect the planet by reducing waste.
