2,000-Year-Old Olympic Pool From Antiquity Uncovered in Aydın, Turkey: A Roman Wonder!
A journey back in time from Aydin's Efeler district to the ancient city of Tralleis reveals a 2,000-year-old history. Excavations in the ancient city have uncovered a 300-person swimming pool, measuring 37 meters in length and 12 meters in width. The structure, built in accordance with the Olympic standards of the time, also sheds light on the sports and cultural understanding of the ancient era.
Here are the details.
A 2,000-Year-Old Pool Carrying the Traces of Ancient Athletes
In the ancient city of Tralleis in Aydın, a pool of Olympic scale was found in the excavations led by Prof. Dr. Murat Çekilmez, a faculty member of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Archaeology Department at Aydın Adnan Menderes University.
Excavation chairman Prof. Dr. Murat Çekilmez stated that the uncovered structure is 37 meters long and 12 meters wide, saying,
'In the Ancient Age, these cold water swimming pools were especially used in the middle part of the bath complexes. The example in Tralleis is a swimming pool for approximately 300 people.'
Not Just a Swimming Pool: An Education and Sports Complex!
It is thought that the pool in Tralleis was not used solely for cooling off. The gymnasium (education and sports complex) located right behind the structure indicates that this was an important center where young athletes were trained.
Çekilmez said,
'We think that 35,000 people used the bath-gymnasium complex in a day. Children who were educated here were expected to become professional athletes.'
It Was Fed With a 56 Kilometer Water System
Another notable feature of the ancient pool was its advanced water infrastructure. Prof. Dr. Çekilmez explained that spring water was used in the pool and this water was brought from the mountains in the north of the city with a system of approximately 56 kilometers.
In the excavations, a sewage system that allowed the pool to be emptied quickly was also found. Çekilmez drew attention to the level reached by Ancient engineering, saying, 'The water was filled quickly, and when it was polluted, it was emptied and cleaned again.'
It Will Meet Water for the First Time Since Ancient Times
After the completion of the excavation work, it is planned to refill the ancient pool with water.
