The majority of oranges sold in supermarkets are found in red or orange nets. At first glance, this color choice seems to merely serve the purpose of packaging and transportation. However, there's a visual illusion behind it, making the fruits appear more vibrant and ripe.

The red or orange netting makes the color of an orange peel appear more intense and vibrant. The slight green hues remaining on the fruit are less noticeable due to the netting, making the orange appear more ripe, juicy, and appetizing.

Karl R. Gegenfurtner, a perception psychologist from the University of Giessen in Germany, noticed that the oranges he bought from the supermarket appeared much greener once removed from the netting. Upon further investigation, he discovered that the color of the oranges hadn't changed, but the visual effect created by the netting altered the perceived color.

Therefore, it's possible for an orange that appears quite orange in the netting to look more pale or greenish once removed from the packaging. Consequently, the red netting does not guarantee that the fruit is genuinely more ripe or tasty.

This optical phenomenon is referred to as the 'confetti illusion'. When assessing the color of an object seen through small gaps, the brain is influenced by the surrounding colors. When red stripes are placed in front of an orange, the visual system perceives the fruit as a more intense orange by merging similar colors.

A similar method is employed in the packaging of other fruits and vegetables. Selling lemons in yellow nets and limes in green ones enhances their natural colors. However, the same product can appear paler or in an unusual color when placed in a net of a different color.

Researchers point out that producers and sellers have been exploiting this effect of colors on perception for a long time. Yet, it has not been directly investigated to what extent this illusion boosts sales.
