What's White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch About?

Former employees, ranging from cashiers to executives to models, reveal how Abercombie & Fitch purposefully positioned themselves as an aristocratic brand for preppy white people, ensuring that anyone who did not fit the mold was marginalized or disregarded.

Abercrombie & Fitch was a term in covetable fashion for many who came of age in the mid-1990s. Back then, the preppy American apparel brand, founded in 1892 and redesigned by enigmatic CEO Mike Jeffries, was the cool kid's uniform, and it had a global influence even before its first non-US stores opened in Canada in 2005 and the United Kingdom in 2007.

Abercrombie was hiding some terrible truths about how it handled its employees and how it perceived its customers, as Alison Klayman's smart and forthright documentary reveals. Klayman avoids any tricks or gimmicks — with the exception of some vivid collage animation — to enable this powerful narrative to unfold via the eye-opening experiences of those who lived it.
