Cem Yılmaz Responds After Nurgül Yeşilçay's "Cane" Remark
Nurgül Yeşilçay's comments about ageism toward actresses got people talking, especially one line about walking with a cane that many read as a dig at comedian Cem Yılmaz. When the subject was put to Cem Yılmaz himself, he answered with warm words about her.
Nurgül Yeşilçay spoke out against the roles offered to actresses as they get older.
Known to wide audiences as Gülsüm in İkinci Bahar and Bahar in Asmalı Konak, Nurgül Yeşilçay has also appeared in films such as Eğreti Gelin and Yaşamın Kıyısında.
On the program Hakan Gence ile Sıkı Muhabbet, she objected to women being moved away from love stories after a certain age, while male actors continue to be seen as leading men. She also criticized the casting of much older men opposite far younger women, saying she does not think this comes from audience demand but from the way producers see things.
The line that drew the most attention
'Saying someone has one foot in the grave and then walking around with a cane and all that. What are you doing?' Nurgül Yeşilçay said. She named no one, but the words were interpreted as a reference to Cem Yılmaz.
Cem Yılmaz answered with "I love Nurgül very much."
The interpretation stemmed from a joke in one of Cem Yılmaz's shows, about people saying he had 'found a young one' when he was with a 38-year-old woman. His use of the phrase 'about to die' for the woman's age had drawn criticism, and later footage of him with a cane came up again alongside Nurgül Yeşilçay's comments.
Asked about it, Cem Yılmaz first addressed the cane: 'People have been talking about my cane since the '90s.' Then he turned to Nurgül Yeşilçay: 'I love Nurgül very much, I would never think anything bad about her. I love witty people.'
