She topped the Turkish charts with 'Ya Sen Ya Hiç' and left a whole generation with the memory of her stage style. Now Bendeniz is back in the conversation. These days the 53-year-old singer is known less for new albums than for her concerts, and fans of '90s nostalgia are once again talking about the 'Lampshade Girl' and her new chapter on stage.

Bendeniz reached the top of the charts as the "Lampshade Girl" with her first album in 1993.

Born Deniz Çelik on July 25, 1973, in Zürich, Switzerland, Bendeniz has family roots in Konya. After finishing Erenköy Girls' High School, she went back to Switzerland to study. Back in Turkey, she briefly played football too, and her music career began when a song she sang at a friend's birthday party caught the attention of the label Raks Müzik.

Her first album, Bendeniz I, came out in 1993 with the 'Abajur Kız' (Lampshade Girl) image designed by Neslihan Yargıcı. Its opening track 'Ya Sen Ya Hiç' quickly climbed to number one and reached the final of the Turkish qualifiers for MTV Europe's Euro Video Grand Prix. With 'Ağlayayım mı?', 'Kerime' and 'Müjdeler Ver' also becoming hits, she secured her place among the pop icons of the '90s with that first record.

Her songs went on to be reinterpreted by other artists abroad, including in Lebanon and Israel.

The momentum continued with Biz, the 1994 maxi single she released with Harun Kolçak, and Bendeniz II in 1995, when 'Neler Olacak' and 'Gönül Yareler İçinde' became some of the most talked-about slow songs of the year.

She tried out Anatolian rock sounds on Bendeniz III in 1996, then built a long discography reaching into the 2000s with Bendeniz'den, Kurtulamıyorum and Zaman, followed by Demedim mi, Aşk Yok mu Aşk and Değiştim.

Now 53, Bendeniz brings '90s nostalgia to a new generation at her concerts.

In recent years Bendeniz has made headlines more for her concerts than for new albums, performing classics like 'Ya Sen Ya Hiç' live. Her Istanbul shows bring together listeners looking for the sound of the '90s and young people discovering her songs for the first time.

On Instagram, where she shares only concert announcements, she recently made an exception with a sweet moment with her dog.
