China is pioneering an unparalleled method in the battle against desertification. As part of a massive project implemented in the arid lands of Ningxia province, solar panels are being utilized like umbrellas, serving a dual purpose: generating clean energy and protecting goji berry fields.

The Chinese government has transformed renewable energy into a permanent weapon to halt desertification, curb sandstorms, and rejuvenate degraded soils.

According to the country's national development plan, there is an ambitious target to establish a full 253 GW of solar energy capacity in arid regions by the year 2030.

This colossal endeavor aims to completely greenify and reintroduce to the ecosystem an area of approximately 7,000 square kilometers, which is roughly four times the size of Greater London, by transforming it from a degraded land.

Operated by the Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group, the colossal 1-gigawatt facility presents an unusual sight in the desert with its thousands of solar panels.

Facility authorities indicate that these ground-mounted photovoltaic panels serve as umbrellas in the region.

So how do these 'solar umbrellas' change life in the desert?

Preserving Moisture: By blocking direct sunlight from hitting the ground, the panels significantly reduce water evaporation and moisture loss in the arid climate.

Cutting Wind and Erosion: These massive structures reduce the speed of harsh ground-level winds, preventing the movement of sand dunes and the swallowing up of fertile soil.

Shielding Goji Berries: In the shade created by the panels, the region's famous product, goji berries (wolfberries), can comfortably grow. The vegetation placed at the bottom also helps the soil to hold together.

China had introduced strict regulations in recent years, prohibiting the installation of solar panels on fertile agricultural lands.

The shifting of solar energy projects to deserts and semi-arid areas is reducing the pressure on areas used for food production. Deserts, with their high light intensity, provide an impeccable environment for energy production, while also eliminating competition for space.

China has been conducting a massive reforestation campaign since 1978, known as the 'Three-North Shelter Forest Program'. Just a few months ago (November 2024), it was announced that the 3,000-kilometer green belt surrounding the Taklamakan Desert had been completed. Solar panels are not replacing these traditional reforestation methods; instead, they serve as a technological shield that supports them.

According to official data, as of June 2025, the installed capacity of wind and solar energy in China reached 1.67 billion kilowatts, thus surpassing thermal (coal) energy production.

This significant transformation in energy, when combined with environmental projects, results in a dual success story that both protects nature and produces.

Although desolate lands still cover 26.8% of China's territory, this successful experiment in Ningxia offers hope for the cities and agriculture of the future. As regional administrators have pointed out, the goal is not to completely erase deserts from the map; instead, it's about living in harmony with nature and minimizing their destructive effects.
