Trump Announces Permanent Greenland Deal With Denmark
US President Donald Trump announced that they have reached an agreement with Denmark for permanent security control in Greenland. Trump declared that the process of establishing a large-scale military presence on the island will commence immediately. Emphasizing that the agreement will not incur any cost to the US, Trump stated that no country will be able to establish a base on the island without their approval.

US President Donald Trump announced in a social media post that a consensus has finally been reached on the security issue that has been in discussion with Denmark and Greenland for months. In his post, Trump expressed his pleasure in announcing that the US has signed an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, which grants the US permanent control over the security needs in Greenland and fully addresses the concerns of the US.
Clarifying the scope of the agreement, Trump particularly emphasized that it would not impose any financial burden on Washington. Accordingly, the US will effectively have a say over the island's security, but will not make any payments in return. Another notable detail in the post was the prohibition of foreign troop deployment.
Trump noted that the agreement is 'indefinite'.
Following the agreement, Trump outlined the steps to be taken in his statement. Accordingly, the US will immediately initiate the process of establishing a large-scale military presence in strategically suitable areas of Greenland.
Trump continued as follows:
'Moreover, from now on, no enemy of the US can ever establish a base in Greenland, demonstrate a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our explicit written approval.'
Noting that this agreement is 'indefinite,' Trump stated, 'We will immediately start the process of establishing a large-scale military presence in suitable areas of Greenland.'
On the other hand, the Danish government had repeatedly reiterated that Greenland was not for sale, emphasizing the island's sovereignty rights. At the same time, the European Union had prepared a new investment package of 200 million euros to increase its activity on the island, seeking a larger representation in the capital, Nuuk. The security agreement announced today draws attention as it is the first concrete step following months of tension between the US and Denmark.
