Truck Driver With No Carpentry Experience Built 1,700 Shelters and Helped 5,000 Stray Animals
On a rainy night, truck driver Leomar Miguel noticed stray dogs and cats, drenched in the downpour, struggling to find a safe haven, even if they managed to scrounge for food. Despite having no prior experience in carpentry, he took it upon himself to learn woodworking and started crafting shelters in his spare time. What started as a personal initiative turned into a massive solidarity project over three years, with Miguel distributing more than 1,700 shelters he made in his small workshop for free, reaching approximately 5,000 stray animals.
The animals he saw in the rain led him to learn carpentry.
On a rainy night, as Leomar Aparecido Miguel was resting in his truck, he noticed that the dogs and cats on the street had nowhere to take shelter. Despite food and water being left around, there were no kennels to protect the animals from the rain and cold.
Miguel, who had never done carpentry before, taught himself how to work with wooden pieces. He turned an unused plot of land into a temporary workshop and prepared the first kennels in his spare time from work.
Over a span of three years, more than 1,700 huts were distributed free of charge.
The project, which has grown under the name 'Semeadores do Bem Pet', has produced over 1,700 kennels in approximately three years. According to local records, these kennels have helped shelter around 5,000 animals from rain and cold in São José do Rio Preto and its surroundings.
The kennels are given free of charge to animal protectors, associations, and families with limited financial resources. Miguel, who receives about 10 new requests per day, procures some of the wood and other materials used in production through donations; he covers the remaining shortages from his own income from time to time.
While Miguel continues his job as a truck driver, he builds the kennels during his off days and in the evenings. What started as a one-man operation has evolved into a broader network of solidarity with the participation of volunteers who provide material and transportation support.
