Tomb Filled with Gold Unearthing After a Thousand Years
El Caño Archaeological Park has made a fascinating discovery that has maintained its mystery for over 1000 years. As a result of the excavations carried out in the park in Panama, a pre-Columbian period tomb was unearthed. The tomb, which is fully adorned with gold jewelry, is believed to belong to a high-ranking official.
This discovery also takes us on a journey towards the ancient Central American communities. Here are the details:
Noteworthy Discovery in 20-Year Excavation!
In El Caño Archaeological Park, located in the Natá region of the Coclé province, about 200 kilometers southwest of Panama City, a tomb filled with gold was found during excavation works that have been ongoing for 20 years. This special area, named 'Tomb 3', was first noticed in 2009 due to the density of ceramic and metal pieces on the surface, but the complete revelation of the big secret inside was completed with the works that lasted until the end of the 2026 excavation season.
A 1000-Year-Old Treasure: From A.D. 800 to the 1000s!
The conducted research indicates that the tomb dates back to the period between 800 and 1000 AD. In the tomb, dazzling gold artifacts were found along with numerous ceramic pots adorned with traditional motifs.
The tomb was equipped with two gold breastplates featuring bat and crocodile figures symbolizing mystical powers, two bracelets, and two ear ornaments. These findings suggest that the owner of the tomb was a high-ranking leader. Moreover, it was also determined that he was buried collectively with other people who were interred with him to accompany him in the afterlife, in accordance with the ancient burial tradition.
The Secret Codes of the Ancient Society and their Belief System
The discovery provides very clear information about the unknown social and belief structures of pre-Columbian Central American communities. The findings show that in these cultures, death was not considered an end, and it was believed that social status and power in the world continued exactly the same in the afterlife. The use of the same cemetery only for the elite class for approximately 200 years and the rich metal craftsmanship unearthed; proves that El Caño was an advanced center governed by ideological beliefs, with a strong commercial, political and artistic interaction network with surrounding regions (like Sitio Conte).
