They have the ability to sprawl out under the direct sunlight and doze off for hours on end, even amidst the most blistering heat. But does this hold true for all cats?
A social media enthusiast took it upon themselves to measure the body temperatures of black and white cats that were sunbathing outdoors, utilizing an infrared laser thermometer. The disparity between the two sparked a thoughtful debate on the question, 'What should be done?'

Despite their fur coats reaching high temperatures under the sun, black cats are protected from this external heat reaching their skin thanks to their dense fur acting as a powerful insulator. Moreover, these creatures, lacking the ability to perspire like humans, cool themselves down by licking and evaporating their saliva, and maintain their body temperature by minimizing their activity during the hottest parts of the day. Owing to their desert-dwelling ancestors, black cats have a genetic resilience to heat. However, in spite of these heat-tolerance mechanisms, they can still risk suffering from heatstroke if they are exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
So, what measures can be taken to ensure their protection?
Establish Shaded Areas: You can create shaded spots by drawing the curtains over sunlit windows in your home. For cats that live outdoors, arrange shelters that are shielded from direct sunlight and have good air circulation.
Provide Fresh and Cold Water: The most effective method for them to regulate their body temperature is by drinking water. You can add a few ice cubes to their water bowl. Distribute several water bowls throughout various locations in your home.
Avoid Completely Shaving Their Fur: One of the biggest misconceptions is to entirely shave a cat's fur in the name of 'comfort'. As previously mentioned, their fur serves as a protective barrier against the heat. A fully shaved cat is directly exposed to sunlight and risks getting sunburned. Regular brushing to remove dead hairs can enhance air circulation without harming their natural protection.
Assist with a Damp Towel: If you observe that they are extremely distressed, you can gently wipe their body, paws, and behind their ears with a towel that is damp (but not excessively cold or wet).
Allow Access to Cool Floors: Cats have a preference for cool surfaces such as tiles or marble when it's hot. Make sure they have unrestricted access to these areas.
