Shocking Diagnosis: Man Has Double Mastectomy!
Living in Tekirdag, 54-year-old İlyas Akman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. Despite breast cancer being commonly known as a 'women's disease' in society, Akman managed to cling to life thanks to an early diagnosis. Akman, who had both of his breasts removed due to the risk of cancer, changed his life when he noticed a lump in his left breast.
After discovering a lump in his hand during a bath, he found himself on the way to the hospital. Ilyas Akman was diagnosed with breast cancer.
It all started when Ilyas Akman felt a hardness in his left breast during a routine shower. Despite not experiencing any pain or discomfort, Akman recognized that something was amiss and promptly sought the advice of a general surgery specialist. Following a series of diagnostic tests including a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy, Akman was diagnosed with breast cancer. Not even a week had passed since the diagnosis when Akman found himself on the operating table. After a successful surgery, he completed an intense four-month course of chemotherapy.
She had both of her breasts removed to mitigate the risk.
Akman, who underwent genetic testing with her family after chemotherapy, revealed that despite no issues being found, she chose to have her other breast removed after a genetic predisposition was identified. Akman stated:
'After the chemotherapy, we as a family underwent genetic testing. Due to the genetic predisposition found in my family, I had to have my right breast removed one year later. There was no problem with it at the time, but to avoid repeating the same issue, going through the same treatment process, and having to start chemotherapy all over again, we decided to remove it. After this genetic issue came up, it was also found in my sister. Three years later, my sister was diagnosed with the same illness and continued her treatment. Currently, both she and I are in good health. I am now coming in for check-ups every six months, and everything is going well.'
Breast cancer is rarely seen in men. Akman underscored the importance of men checking their bodies regularly.
Akman emphasized that despite its rarity in men, breast cancer should not be overlooked. He stressed the importance of men examining their own bodies, and concluded his remarks as follows:
'Do you know, in men, I've done some research; the mortality rate is 90 percent higher in men compared to women. Women have the advantage of longer treatment processes due to their hormones, and their recovery periods are quite extensive. In men, when there is no early diagnosis, once it spreads to the armpits and lymph nodes, you're on a path of no return. And the mortality rate is indeed high.
Yes, it's very rare in men, but this is because men are not as sensitive as women. But aren't we, men, taking a bath every day or every other day? If you scrub like this while bathing and do this on your nipples, you can notice any difference there. Because that's how I noticed it and came here when there was no pain or ache. But we men sometimes don't care about these things. It's not hard, it's easy. It's beneficial to go to the doctor if you feel something different while scrubbing your nipples like this for 5 minutes. Because early diagnosis saves lives. That's what happened in my case too.'
