Science Answers: Which Partner Is Happier in an Age Gap Relationship?
While it's common for couples to be of similar ages in relationships, there has been a noticeable increase in relationships with significant age differences in recent years. The question of which party experiences more happiness and satisfaction in such relationships has been a topic of curiosity for quite some time. A recent study conducted by London Metropolitan University has scientifically revealed how relationship satisfaction varies in couples with an age gap.
Here are the details of the study...
In traditional relationships, the parties are usually of similar ages.
However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of couples with an age gap of seven years or more. But does this age difference truly lead to happiness in these relationships? More importantly, who tends to be happier in these relationships - the younger or the older partner?
A research team led by Samantha Banbury from the Department of Psychology at London Metropolitan University in England sought scientific answers to these questions. In a study published in 2025, data from 126 volunteer couples with a minimum age difference of seven years was analyzed. The participants filled out a series of surveys regarding both their mental health and their level of satisfaction in their relationships.
What are the findings of the research?
Relationship Satisfaction
One of the most striking findings of the study pertained to relationship satisfaction. It was observed that among heterosexual and homosexual men, those who were in a relationship with a partner at least 7 years their junior were significantly more satisfied with their relationships compared to those with an older partner. In contrast, no notable difference was observed among women on this matter. In other words, women seem to experience similar levels of relationship satisfaction irrespective of whether their partner is older or younger.
General Mental Well-being
In evaluations related to the participants' mental health, no significant difference was found that directly correlated with the age of their partner. This suggests that being with a younger or older partner does not markedly influence an individual's overall psychological well-being.
Sexual Satisfaction
When it comes to the level of sexual satisfaction, a common result emerged for both men and women. Individuals with younger partners reported greater satisfaction in their sexual lives.
Perception of Financial Security
Some intriguing data was gathered when looking at the perception of financial security in relationships. It was observed that young women in relationships with older men and young men in relationships with older men felt more financially secure. However, a similar sense of security was not detected in relationships where young men were with older women or where young women were with older women.
