Rally Champion Dimi Mavropoulos Dies After Luxury Yacht Sinks in Cyprus Storm
The storm and heavy downpour that hit the Greek Cypriot Administration led to loss of lives and significant damage at sea. On the day when the Greek Cypriot Meteorological Department issued a 'yellow code' warning, two out of three boats caught in the storm off Cape Greco (Konnos Bay) sank. The owner of the sunken luxury superyacht, former rally champion and millionaire businessman Dimi Mavropoulos (76), tragically lost his life.
Dimi Mavropoulos, the head honcho of Mavromarine Ltd., a maritime and vehicle rental firm, found himself caught in a sudden storm while navigating the waters in his ultra-luxurious yacht, 'Perla Bianca', along with two other boats in the vicinity.
Upon receiving distress calls from the boats, police and military helicopters, patrol boats, fire trucks, and ambulances were dispatched to the area.
Mavropoulos' superyacht and another boat were rendered unusable after being swept into the rocks by the storm and grounding ashore.
When their yacht crashed into the rocks, Mavropoulos's wife and daughter threw themselves into the sea.
In the rescue operation carried out by the teams, a total of 4 people - the businessperson's wife and daughter from the sinking second boat, and those affected by the storm on the third boat - were rescued by helicopter and rushed to the hospital.
Dimi Mavropoulos, aged 76, was found unconscious in the water, far from both the boat and the shore. The prominent businessperson was immediately airlifted to the hospital. Despite all interventions, he tragically lost his life.
