Live Isolated From Earth for a Year: NASA is Looking for Volunteers for Mars & Moon Sim!
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is looking for volunteers for its 2027 mission. Volunteers will live in isolation from the world for a year. This special simulation program aims to examine the effects of long-term space travel on human health and performance in more detail.
So, who can apply for NASA's Mars and Moon missions?
NASA Begins Countdown for "Moon and Mars Exploration Simulation"
Within the scope of the research, volunteers will experience the living conditions that astronauts who will go to the Moon and Mars in the future may encounter. Many scenarios such as long-term isolation, delayed communication, limited resources, and planned tasks will be part of the simulation.
NASA aims to identify the risks that may arise in long space missions in advance and prepare the astronauts for these challenging conditions in the safest way possible.
A Year Isolated from the World in an Artificial Habitat in Houston
The simulation will be conducted at a special research facility located at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Texas. Four volunteers to be selected will contribute to scientific research by living in an isolated living space from the outside world for about a year.
The program will be conducted under the 'Moon and Mars Exploration Analog' program, built on the experiences gained from NASA's previous manned space mission simulations.
Who Can Apply?
NASA is looking for certain health and fitness criteria in the candidates who will apply for the program. Only 4 people will be selected from the applications. It is not necessary for the volunteers to be astronauts, but the criteria that the candidates need to meet are quite challenging. Here are the conditions:
In order to participate in the program, candidates need to meet strict criteria that do not fall short of real astronaut selections. Those who will apply must be between the ages of 30-55, be a US citizen or have a permanent residence permit, and be able to speak English fluently. In addition, they are expected to have a bachelor's degree in STEM fields such as engineering, mathematics, biology, physics or computer science, and to present relevant professional or military experience.
Candidates must not exceed 188 centimeters in height, successfully pass comprehensive physical and psychological evaluations, and participate in a multi-day selection process. NASA also does not accept candidates with a history of sleepwalking, food allergies, or health conditions requiring special diets into the program. The selected volunteers are expected to devote about 14 months to this mission, including the training process.
