In November, temperatures in many cities soared to 30 degrees, sparking concerns across the country as averages hovered around 25 degrees. Questions such as 'Will it snow?' and 'What will the winter of 2026 be like?' were on everyone's lips, prompting a response from Meteorology Expert Orhan Şen. Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen shed light on what this year's winter might look like.

Orhan Şen responded to the question, 'How will the winter be?' as follows:

'How will this year's winter be in Turkey? That's important. There are three or four meteorological factors that influence, or rather, regulate the winter conditions in Turkey. One of them is the change in the temperature of the sea level in the Eastern Pacific, which we refer to as El Niño and La Niña. Another is the situation in the North Atlantic Oscillations near the Canary Islands. These two meteorological factors direct, or rather, determine how the winter in Turkey will be.

Therefore, when we look at these, high pressure in the North Atlantic Oscillations indicates that there will be less precipitation in Turkey. When we look at the temperature, the most significant factor is what we call the Siberian High Pressure, which is a thermal pressure. And the movement with this high pressure is important. Why is this movement important? Because it causes the disruption or strengthening of what we call the Polar Vortex in the poles.

Looking at this winter, we see that the Polar Vortex will weaken a bit more. This is due to the changes in the Siberian High Pressure.'

When will it snow?

'The weakening of this Polar Vortex will start from the second month of 2026. So, until February (until February 2026), the temperatures in Turkey will be above average. It will be 45 degrees above the average.

In summary: The temperatures will be high, precipitation will be low, but there will be a slight recovery in precipitation in February and March. Alongside this, there will be a slight drop in temperatures due to the Polar Vortex. So, if we are expecting snowfall in Istanbul, we will see a few days of snowfall that could extend into the end of January, February, and even March.'
