HBO Max's 'The White Lotus' Scores an Astounding 10 Awards at the 74th Prime Emmy Awards

HBO/HBO Max has a reason to celebrate this year as it earned the greatest number of Emmy Awards among the streaming platforms, with its comedy-drama series The White Lotus scooping 10 wins. HBO and HBO Max took home a total of 38 Emmys doubling its 19 2021 trophies. 

The White Lotus’ director Mike White won an award for best directing and writing. The win was topped up with others in different categories, which we’ll get into shortly.

The White Lotus is a comedy-drama anthology series that premiered on July 11 2021 and follows the guests and staff of a fictional White Lotus resort chain whose operations are impacted by various mishaps. 

Though originally meant to be a six-episode miniseries, the TV show was met with high ratings and critical acclaim that HBO renewed it for a second season, set to debut next month.

The White Lotus stars its main cast Jennifer Coolidge, Murray Bartlett, Alexandra Daddario, Connie Britton, Fred Hechinger, Jake Lacy, Natasha Rothwell, Brittany O’Grady, Sydney Sweeney, Molly Shannon and Steve Zahn.

The first season of The White Lotus was filmed in Hawaii, hence the name The White Lotus: Hawaii. The second season is set in Sicily, Italy. 

Season one of The White Lotus contains six episodes, each running for approximately one hour. Here is a guide to their titles and release dates:

As the second season will focus on another White Lotus chain in Sicily, the show will introduce a cast of new members. However, White stated that a few cast members from the first season could reprise their roles, including Coolidge, who will feature as a guest star. 

The stars cast in The White Lotus season 2 include Aubrey Imperioli, F. Murray Abraham, Haley Lu Richardson, Aubrey Plaza, Adam DiMarco, Theo James, Tom Hollander, Will Sharpe, Meghann Fahy, Leo Woodall, Beatrice Grannó, Simona Tabasco and Sabrina Impacciatore.

Coming in second place in the Emmy Awards accolades is another HBO Max success, Euphoria, which scooped six wins. The satirical black comedy drama Succession took home four Emmy Awards. 

Trailing behind Succession is the black comedy crime drama series Barry with three wins. The comedy-drama Hacks also scooped three awards along with the show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver taking home the same number.

In 2021, Netflix was the undisputed Emmy champion, with 44 wins, which was more than twice that of HBO's 19. HBO has tremendously pulled ahead in 2022, scooping 38 trophies, while Netflix's has dropped to 26 wins.
