Balen Shah, born in 1990 (pronounced in Turkish as Balen Shah), is one of Nepal's recognized rappers. Elected as the mayor of Kathmandu in 2022, Shah resigned from his post to run for prime minister.
In September, the country was shaken by protests that resulted in numerous fatalities. The events culminated in the resignation of Nepal's prime minister. Following the resignation, Balen Shah emerged as a prominent political figure, sharing a message stating, 'Dear Generation Z, your killer has resigned. Now, it's your generation's turn to lead the country. Be ready.'
Shah, who has stated that he was inspired to pursue music by world-renowned rappers Tupac Shakur and 50 Cent, has released numerous rap songs containing social criticism. The former rapper Balen Shah has now emerged as the strongest candidate for the prime ministership.
His party has left everyone in the dust. It's virtually a foregone conclusion that he will become the Prime Minister.
According to the figures released in the race for Prime Minister, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by Balen Shah, has pulled significantly ahead of its competitors. There's buzz that the party, which is currently leading the race, is demonstrating a dominant performance and is likely to take the reins of the government. Balen Shah is so beloved in the country that buses heading to Kathmandu bear stickers saying 'Heading to Balen's city.'
Should Balen Shah win the election, his journey from 'rap music to the country's premiership' is being interpreted as a 'dramatic ascent.' The key reason for Balen Shah's public support is attributed to his avoidance of mainstream media and his active presence on social media. Political analysts noted that Balen's active use of social media to broadcast his messages, in particular, has forged a significant connection with Generation Z.
