Early Years

Early Years

Fikret Kızılok's musical journey began during his schooling at Galatasaray High School's elementary section in Istanbul. It was here that he was introduced to music, receiving his first instrument, a red accordion, as a birthday gift. He took his initial music lessons from a classmate's father, who was a clarinet player. Fikret's first concert took place during a school performance at Taksim Municipality Gazinosu on April 23rd, where he and his classmates formed a small music group called 'Fikret Kızılok and the Orchestra,' delighting the audience with their performances of traditional folk songs. During this period, their biggest hit was their rendition of the folk song 'Tamzara.'

As he grew older, Fikret Kızılok's musical interests evolved, and he traded his accordion for a guitar, inspired by artists like Elvis Presley. During his high school years, he found support and encouragement from fellow musicians Barış Manço and Timur Selçuk, who were in higher grades.

First Records

Living in Kadıköy, Fikret Kızılok embarked on a new musical endeavor in 1964 with his friend Cahit Oben. They formed a new group called 'Cahit Oben 4,' along with bassist Koray Oktay and drummer Erol Ulaştır. The group mainly performed music in the style of The Beatles. They started performing at Çatı Night Club, run by İlham Gencer, and continued with neighborhood concerts. They recorded two 45 rpm records on their own budget, with the first one featuring two foreign songs: The Beatles' 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and '36 24 36.' The second record marked their return to their roots.

Fikret Kızılok's Solo Journey: From 'Three Heirs' to Individual Brilliance

In 1965, Fikret Kızılok released his first record under the name 'Fikret Kızılok and Three Heirs.' The group consisted of Harun Batıbaygil on guitar, Gökhan Targay on bass, and Koral Tümay on drums. The songs 'Belle Marie' and 'Kız Ayşe' on the record were both composed by Fikret Kızılok. After releasing records with different groups, Fikret Kızılok felt the urge to explore his individual musical path. He released his first solo EP with four songs, showcasing his folk and beat influences. Although the EP did not gain much attention at the time, it paved the way for his solo career.

The Anadolu Period

During his final year at Istanbul Dental School, Fikret Kızılok took a transformative journey with his childhood friend, Arda Uskan, during which they met and were influenced by the legendary Turkish folk singer, Aşık Veysel. Inspired by this encounter, Fikret recorded a new arrangement of Aşık Veysel's folk song 'Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım' and released it as a 45 rpm record. This marked a turning point in his career.

A Journey with Aşık Veysel and the Rise to Stardom

In November 1969, he visited Aşık Veysel again, spending three months under his tutelage. His return to Istanbul resulted in the release of another record, 'Yumma Gözün Kör Gibi,' which solidified his success in the Turkish music scene. In 1970, Fikret Kızılok's popularity soared, earning him accolades in the 'Year's Music Oscars' organized by Hey magazine. He was awarded 'Male Singer of the Year,' and his songs ranked high in the charts.
